Hey Y’all!
This is my new blog to document the in’s and out’s of my southern, teaching life! Thanks to encouragement from my mother and friends we will see where this leads!
About Me:
I feel like I am starting my MySpace page circa 2003, minus the pressure of choosing my “top 8″…
I am a 27 year-old single lady living in the south. I graduated from the University of Florida and I am an obsessive gator addict. I am the stereotypical, crazy, college football girl who LOVES her college and wishes she could go back. I was in a sorority, to remain unnamed for now, but I will tell you I am blonde (wink wink). I wear my sundresses on gamedays, most of the time, and I know how to shoot whiskey with the boys while maintaining my southern belle class. I have a younger brother who also attended UF and lives in Tampa, FL. The whole family is rooted deep in the south and to the Florida Gators (my father says “yonder” and “yeller”-not yellow- and my mother cannot pronounce “pedro” or “chipotle”).
I realized my junior year of college that I wanted to be a teacher, I worked with kids at an after school program my entire college career, but I knew that elementary children were not my cup of tea. I did not want the pressure of someone’s ability to read to be on me…that one would come back to bite me. After several discussions with my academic advisor and arguments with my parents (my mother is a teacher and was not a fan of my career choice…I wouldn’t make enough money to support my lifestyle she said…she was right btw), I decided to pursue a degree in History. I knew I wanted to teach AP U.S. History (11th graders). Luckily for me, and my parents’ bank account, I had taken history classes as “fillers” since I enjoyed it so much and could graduate early as planned.
After college I did not jump right into teaching, I worked for a wonderful and classy company known for their dark, cologne-filled, shirtless guys out front, stores. They moved me down south, and not the south that says “y’all” and “bless your heart.” Don’t get me wrong, I met some great people and learned A LOT about how to manage 17-30 year-olds. After two years of dealing with the hustle and bustle of the “south” I moved back to within the Bible Belt, best decision I made in awhile.
After several more jobs, I finally landed a teaching position with an amazing school, in an amazing county, one that I even attended when I was younger.
This is where we begin, I will reminisce about the last year and what is currently happening. Sit back and enjoy!
